As systems get older, one does tend to add new components: software patches, peripheral devices, etc.. So your machine isn't exactly the "same" in terms of its original config...
1)check that you are running with the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard, along with the latest drivers for all of your other hardware components (e.g. video card, network adaptor, soundcard, printer, etc..)
2)a BIOS upgrade may be in order..
3) as mentioned by others, a reformat/reinstall of windows always helps... in lieu of that you may want to try a Registry Cleaner, to help get rid of some clutter that accumulates over time
4) Check with harddrive manufacturer, sometimes firmware updates are issued to address problems that crop up with performance, and compatability .
5)as mentioned, consider blowing out some of the dust that accumulates on the CPU Heatsink/Fan with some compressed air.. Make sure you have good airflow throughout the case.. particular from front to back...
6) you said you ran a tight ship, in terms of services, etc.. So I assume you have a good handle on all of the background tasks, etc.. that are running ..
Hope these help...
