SIRIUS audio input to headunit

I have a so-called plug-and-play sirius receiver in my car and had an awful signal when using the wireless transmitter. I then installed a direct connection called an FM Direct Adapter which splices the signal directly into the radio antenna wire. The signal is now completely static free, but the audio quality is generally dull.
Supposedly the 'best' audio is achieved with a direct aux-in or line-in connection to the headunit through a small mini stereo jack, like the type you would use to connect an ipod or similar device. My current headunit doesn't have such a jack and I was considering installing one that does.
I will feel pretty stupid if I go through the trouble of getting a new headunit and the the SIRIUS audio quality isn't substantially improved from what I have with the FM Direct Adapter.
Anyone have any experience with this situation? Thanks.
