I was having a look at this thread, and it occurred to me that he would be a good problem-solver.
The patent world is esoteric, and it could take some time to get moving or gain entrance into the field. I can think of a few universities that have technology transfer departments that need people like your son. Think an Endowment Manager for a university...
The second thing - Insurance Law, specifically subrogation, is getting huge. I work as a Forensic Engineer, and I can tell you that with the change of economic fortunes, these companies are getting really nasty with each other behind the scenes. The thing is - many of the lawyers are good at arguments but lack the fundamentals of failure analysis that assist with understanding product failures. Your son already has the technical basis for that!
Get him in touch with NASP, the National Association of Subrogation Professionals, subrogation.org should find them. You should see the number of law firms advertising in their magazine, The Subrogator.
