You have to have a frostwall/foundation rather than just a slab. A slab (like I have for my 30x40 garage), moves around a little, and a pit would be incompatible with that.
I built mine right before radiant heating became all the rage, and now wish I had it. I would suggest radiant heating tubing installation at the time of concrete work. A solar hot water panel would probably provide a great deal of heat to your floor without any fuel cost/waste/risk.
Also wire up lots of lights. With CFLs and newer flourescent tubes, you can get a lot of light for not much wattage. And lots of light is good for waxing, claying, and most of other car work.
I had half my upstairs cathedral ceiling, so I'd have both room for storage and height for a lift.
