Possibly the seat helps protect. But either way, I doubt the head and upper body of a third row occupant is much more than 1-2 feet (maybe 3 on some?) from the back glass in any minivan. Rear facing seats have the head likely a few more feet. So would you rather have your feet and legs crushed or upper body? Is this safer - I don't know.
I am not defending any 3rd row in rear collisions - just commenting that we should not all just buy Saab comments that they are unsafe - that's why they don't offer them. There are likely other reasons.
