My wife and I were discussing a very similar thing .... My mother-in-law came unglued last week when she learned my wife's sister had left her 11 year-old daughter alone in their apt when my sister-in-law walked to the property management office (on complex) to pay the rent.
My sister-in-law called to ask who was right, her or their mother?
I would walk to the corner store at age 5 or younger with a purse of money given to me by my mother and a list of groceries I could not yet read. Just being a helper and getting the things my mother needed for that evening's meal.
By age eleven I was riding my bike 6 to 10 miles from home for a picnic lunch or swim in a lake, just for something to do in the summer.
I may not have sent my 11 year-old on a subway by himself, with a cross-town bus transfer, to get home. But I have only visited NYC twice, and I am certain this child has made this same trip many times before, just not by himself.
We have to let our children grow. Our role as parents changes from protector to coach to advisor as they get older. It sounds as if this mother acted as coach; she provided all the tools and equipment needed, with a back-up plan if things didn't go well.
