Self employment; Happiness; Success. Posted by vtsnaab [Email] (#26) [Profile/Gallery] (more from vtsnaab) on Sat, 20 Sep 2008 18:43:49 In Reply to: Re: OT:long term business advice, andym, Sat, 13 Sep 2008 03:27:34 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi Sam.
I've been self-employed for around 20 years now and it is what suits me.
Sure - I work hard and longer hours and potentially the work could even
be non-stop -> but I don't miss having ancient, calcified bosses with
the intelligence of a broken pencil sharpener AT ALL.
If I do well, or if I don't I have ONLY myself to blame, and that works
well for me.
What is success for me ?
Knowing I did my best each day and having peaceful rest when my head
gets to the pillow; having a place to live and enough to eat for me
and my one dependent (a 4-legged person...); being able to take off
and just go bumming around for a day by my own choice whenever my old
brain is frazzled - that is one thing which works for a recharge for
me - but the point is I do it when I want/need to and don't need to
beg anyone for 'time off'...ever.
Final thought:
Self-employment means risk as well as cycles of prosperity/slight lack.
I have found it is good to make sure that when there is enough $ on
hand to fill the freezer, keep a good supply of pasta and other dry
goods, and canned meals like chili and the larger sized 1 serving cans
of soup.
Also, having an average month's worth of cash always available is the
best thing to be certain of rather than creating debt at those times.
For me, in my 'drought times' I just bone up on things, eat what I've
got on hand, and make calls to kick start things - and it always works
out. (I also have several skills to fall back on as needed...)
Best Wishes.
