I think the idea of the spare in the 9-5 is if you get stuck with a flat and need to use it you just throw it on and drive a few miles to safety or to where you're going to get your regular tire repaired or replaced. I don't foresee anyone (or myself) in their right mind getting on the highway going on a road trip doing 80 on that stupid little donut, even new. Therefore I am not ever going to worry too much about rubber degradation on my spare. I suppose if you're worried about it you could probably just go to a tire shop and order a new tire. I doubt they'd have the size in stock but I'm sure someone makes one that would fit the spare's rim.
