Speed is not the reason that old, dried tyres fail. It's deterioration of the rubber.
I had one fail that way on my first Saab at a speed of 50 MPH. It ended up in dozens of pieces. This type of failure is sudden and catastrophic.
The reason for my question is that the aging of tyres is due to exposure to moisture, light, ultraviolet particularly, and heat. The spare tyre is not effected by these factors….it’s kept in a dark, dry, cool place.
So, the question is……at what age should the spare tyre be replaced?
