Sounds a little dramatic to call it garbage. It sounds like you're looking for a flawless car, but, well, you bought a used one. And a Viggen to boot, which Ari points out was probably driven hard. I don't know what kind of advice you're looking for, but IMO, your options are fix it or sell it. The other thing I would point out is that having to put the car in first before going into reverse is hardly a problem. I've had to do that on every car I've owned. But somehow it's causing you great angst. I'm assuming, of course, that this shifting into first prior to going into reverse can all be done from the comfort of the driver's seat.
If you want to fix the real problem with the car, post on the 9-3 board and ask them how you should track down the source of your oil consumption. And if it pings terribly, don't use boost in the car until you get it fixed. You probably have heavy carbon deposits on your piston crowns and cylinder head, from burning oil. If you don't have any enthusiasm for working on the car, somebody else will.
