>>>And it's complicated even further by the fact there are a lot of very different snow conditions.<<<
Yep, have to agree. The two family Saabs are good as any on ice (imho the best way to deal with freezing rain or glare ice is to park it, since you're at the mercy of the weather and other idio..., I mean, drivers), on a snowy highway their traction, weight dist and stability enable them to maintain speed, and their ability to keep glass clear gives the driver excellent visibility. Also, they have no trouble shouldering through the snow banks left by snow plows on exit ramps.
Years ago, driving home from work in a NE blizzard on an unplowed highway, I wondered who that idjit was right on my tail all the way home. Turned out to be my Darlin' Dotter who had great confidence in the Saab's ability to plow a path for her sporty ricer.
The only time I've been challenged in a storm has more to do with local geography than a storm. My house is at the top of a fairly steep hill that's approx one mile from bottom to top. You can't get a running start because of traffic. So the road gets slick from top to bottom because of spinning wheels, the snow can be deep enough to challenge the Saab's ground clearance and the other idio ..., I mean drivers, for some reason, imagine that you should take your foot off the gas if your car slides or the wheels spin. The Saab doesn't like to dead stop in 10" of snow with a base layer of ice and then start again ... but it has done it.
