no matter what, that's what my instructor always used the drill into me and that's exactly what he did. I suspect his glider time was also a big part of it, learning how to manage energy. Dead sticking a plane like that is just amazing--they touch down at about 150 mph. A little Cessna floats down like a leaf and touches down at 45 mph with no power. Those things drop like a safe with the door open when they lose power--kudos to the pilot.
