He sure did. The drills military pilots learn cover every eventuality and are drilled into the pilots. They learn to react almost on instinct. He probably knew right away there was no way for him to do a go-around and get a clear runway at LGA and that trying to do a turn and land in Long Island Sound would be a very long shot.
Some news weenies were asking why he didn't try for Teterboro, the general aviation/corporate jet airport across the Hudson in Jersey. According to what I've read, the pilot was only at 1500 feet and determined he couldn't land there, either due to maneuverability issues or inability to use the thrust reversers on the long runway which is only 6000 feet or so.
I have two friends who are US Airways pilots (one in A-320s, the other in various aircraft) and am looking forward to getting their take on this.
