I agree with your Dad regarding charging the key through the ignition... that is NOT likely as the ignition interface is optical, no current will flow. I have owned Mercedes cars of this vintage, and the only mechanical way into the car was using a mechanical key through the driver's door cylinder. The cold weather has probably temporarily frozen the lock linkage.
The remotes most often have coin style batteries within them, typically CR 2032 series... check your owner's manual(probably locked within the car!).
There may be a way to release the front hood latch from under the car. This would allow you to charge the car battery from a power distribution post(s) typically near the driver's side front fender(just thinking about how a factory service technician would rescue a stranded motorist). There should be a pair of posts accessible(positive, negative) for a battery charger as the battery is likely under the back seat for security reasons.
