I've learned to back out the release screw ever so sloooooowly - turn it fast and yes gravity takes over in a hurry.
Mine is a cheapie from Checker Auto - it's not let me down or more correctly let the car down on me yet and it's easily 10 yrs old.
The biggest scare I ever had was taking the gas tank off a 1963 Plymouth station wagon , with the car's ass way up in the air just as I loosened the last strap holding the tank a torsion bar in the front snapped with a tremendous crack - scared the begeezus out of me as at 1st I thought the gas tanked had exploded.
