Without seeing the car, it's really hard to tell - are your problems really serious, or is the tech just trying to drum up business?

I'd say do the cheap stuff and get it to your buddy. Oil change, fresh spark plugs, and idler pulley. Show up at your friend's place with a big box of parts from eeuroparts or saabsite. Get a muffler shop to replace the muffler with a generic high performance item (look for a good custom shop that caters to the local hot rodders/muscle car owners - typically not Midas or whatever chains you have there).

Di Cassette is usually a 'works or not' kind of deal. If it was bad you'd not be driving; if it's good you can't really say it's about to go bad. But many Saab owners keep a spare (get a new one from eeuroparts and use your old one as a spare).

I wonder what their reasons are for recommending head gasket?
