It seems the jack is ok and will release slowly if I don't twist the handle all the way clockwise. When twisted all the way clockwise, there's a metal support or whatever that twists as well and likely creates the difficulty in turning it ccw to release. I thought at first that it was necessary to lock it in place but I don't think so now.
Yes, always use jack stands. Sometimes, two sets!
Would be a rather inglorious way to die.
