very short ones. It depends on the road. The problem being alluded to here is how in some metropolitan areas, such as Los Angeles, the on-ramps have red and green traffic lights that control the flow of vehicles onto the highway. They are set to allow one car at a time to enter, and are placed near the end of the on-ramp so there's sometimes a relatively short distance --20 to 50 meters-- for merging.
It's annoying and really not a big deal in most cars, and there's always a way to merge into traffic as cars already on the highway will (usually) let you in.
