Years back I bought a Chevy Malibu that was owned by my mother. The car was 9 years old and with the original tires (only 30,000 miles on the car). One summer night driving on an inter-state highway at 65 mph the tread on one of the tires proceeded to literally peel off the tire. I thought that I had gotten a flat tire due to the noise of the tread hitting the underbody of the car. Pulled over, got out and was surprised to find that none of the tires was flat. But when I put a flashlight on one of the tires all that you could see was the steel belting material from where the tread previously had been.
Overall a pretty scary "what if" incident that now has me paying close attention to the age of my tires!
