any of the current crop of F1 pilots are as good as some from an earlier age. I think the best were in the '50s, '60s and '70s. The guys from the '50s in particular, tended to not just drive F1 but endurance races, sports cars, and WRC. One week they'd be in F1. The next in a WRC event. The early '60s were similar. Plus the courses were much more hazardous back then and the cars harder to drive well and not nearly as safe.
This required a much broader set of skills and an ability to handle a car at speed in all kinds of conditions, not just the fairly narrow confines of F1. Although some current drivers do cross over to other types of cars/events, nearly all the drivers in each field of racing today are much more specialized than in the past.
The skills of even the bad F1 drivers are superb, you really can't compare eras in racing, and the cars are totally different, but just because Schumacher won more world championships than say, Jackie Stewart, doesn't mean he's a superior driver.
