This is an excellent question. Perhaps the best way to approach it is in terms of looking for another car. After our last car-change, when we were determined that we had to find an alternative to SAAB, and after looking at and driving a number of cars, we ended up with......another SAAB. The same year and model, in fact, just a lot less miles ('04 9-5 Arc Sportwagon).
If this helps, what we drove, in the order they finished with us:
1. Altima
2. Passat*
3 Accord
4. Outback**
*Passat disqualified due to local dealer being completely unacceptable.
**Outback disqualified due to driver's seat being simply too small.
If it matters:
Brands like Acura, Lexus, and Infiniti were disqualified from the outset due to lack of dealers within a reasonable distance.
BMW was disqualified due to value for the money and unacceptable fuel efficiency.
Audi was disqualified due to the driver's seat being about the same size as an Outback. I am 6'6", and even an A8 wasn't in the running.
Volvo was not even driven. It is a dishrag of a car, a completely uninspired tapioca-mobile. It is a monument to the principle that utility is not enough.
Toyota is the Japanese Volvo.
My niece's husband, who sells Mercedes, tried to sell me an AWD crossover (we won't buy RWD). When I saw that the AWD models had an empty weight approaching FIVE THOUSAND POUNDS.... game over.
I am trying very hard to be optimistic about the fate of SAAB, while at the same time believing that our next car will be something else.
