Now it's mats....but it's always been.... Owing to the Lexus case in San Diego the new focus is on the mats and gas pedal placement. That'sa whole new variable. Everybody is hooked on the "gremlin" theory that something like a malfunctioning cruise or drive by wire throttle is at fault, but the UCLA prof is right "In fairness, a UCLA prof said the vast majority of these events generally are people just not knowing which pedal they are pressing."
Years and years of repeated investigations for "gremlins" in Audis, Lexus' and other brands haven't yielded any proof of a gremlin to my knowledge, and yet the "gremlin" conspiracy theorists persists. Now with pedal mis-application already confirmed as the main cause and additional confirmed cause of floor mat interference, maybe the gremlin folks will quiet down.
Meanwhile in San Diego where the most recent high profile Lexus runaway case happened (CHP officer and family killed) the local dealer that provided the Lexus loaner might be cooked as it was reported that the previous person loaned the car complained to the receptionist when he brought it back that the pedal stuck under the mat. The porter who takes care of the loaners says she didn't pass on the info.
