As long as you know the limits of what you're driving, having 4 wheel drive has its benefits and (all-else equal) can take you further with more safety (not in every situation like braking, but it's never worse in other situations).
That being said, unfortunately there are idiots that think their car/truck can do anything and can make winter driving more dangerous for everyone.
Regardless, I personally think that driving in the snow is not something to avoid at all costs. If you have work and your vehicle can take you there, go to work. Driving in the snow is not a big deal in most places.
