It's amazing how much dirt gets in the oil over the course of 3,000 miles even on newer cars. If you don't beleive me wipe your dipstick on a white paper towel after 3K and then put a drop of new oil next to it and compare. The best possible thing you get do for your engine is GET THE DIRT OUT OF THERE. No matter how slippery the synthetics are I can't imagine all that dirty stuff is a good thing. At some point the oil (lord knows how much is in there after 8 or 10K) loses the ability to keep the dirt in suspension so it collects in places like the pan (hence sludge). If regular oil didn't work it would be one thing, but it works perfectly if you simply change it. The only way I'd use synthetic is if I changed it a lot more often than recommended. And if I do that, there's no point in paying extra for it.
