I also am not a fan of cfl's, partly because I live in a 100+ year old house + cfl's really do not suit period fixtures. They also don't work in the cold very well (our outdoor cfl porch light frequently doesn't turn on in the winter - cold winter nights).

Anyway, the link below, while very long + a bit of a rant, is a more detailed look at the situation. The synopsis is basically, mercury aside, cfls should only be installed in certain types of fixtures or they fail prematurely, and when they do fail, they fail in about the worst mechanism possible. Power factor is an issue. Dimmers are a problem as well.

In the end, if you live in a cold climate, the #1 thing you can do to save energy (and hence $$) is reduce your heating costs. Insulate your hot water tank. Ours is about 10 years old. We saved 30% on our electric bill from that. More expensive in the short term is to switch to on demand hot water. Ground source heat pump is the other big one (if you'll live there long enough) in a cold climate.

cfl's haven't saved us money because although they've reduced the electric bill a little, they cost more + their failure rate has been almost as bad as incandescents anyway!

Going to leds from big exterior incandescent Christmas lights has saved a bunch of $$ though (even if my wife says they look uglier)! I calculated $70 annually!
