haha... that's great...
I was the "second owner, out of warranty" who "had no problem paying $400 for a brake job" because I "valued [my] time more than the expense of [your] time". I valued the good service experience I got (though I missed out on the free doughnuts and Starbucks). The carwashes were nice. At that time, my c900 was comparable vintage to a 2002 9-3se today.
Problem was, the brake job cost $1500. It didn't get to the root cause and was repeated a year later. The small headgasket leak which you had trouble diagnosing until the engine failed (in spite of several visits) a year later was met with a $6000+ estimate. Thanks, but I'd rather buy another car.
I quickly discovered my SAAB indy. I "value [my] time more than the expense of [his] time". He can do the same brake job for about $500 + not need a return visit. He can fix the engine messed up by the HG leak for $1700 + I can keep my car! He can replace the failed slushbox for $1500 (all labor) with a used known good one (free) because he doesn't think a c900 slushbox is worth much + values my continued business (though in retrospect, I should have taken him up on the more costly stick transplant). We've gotten 5 years off that used slushbox vs the c900 being recycled + turned into tuna cans or even worse, a Prius! My indy does a good business! He owns a Porsche (among other cars, including of course a square nose 900 turbo).
But I simultaneously fell into your "second to the last layer" category because I used you for some oil changes (with great service + reasonable price) and diagnosis. Anything major I took to my indy, and you understood. It's now an old car + he has more parts for it on the shelf than you do anyway.
Finally, I realized, my indy doesn't need to waste time dealing with my stuck door locks, corroded window switches, and bad tail light assembly. I also switch my wheels from winter to summer because I got tired of him overtightening the lug bolts + I don't need to pay him $30 to do something so quick + easy. His time is better spent fixing brakes, engines, and transmissions. So I learned to do the simple things needed to keep the car nice + pay him for the oil pump and water pump that were near death over the past year (because I still "value [my] time more than the expense of [his] time" for many things).
So in the end, a little DIY isn't really a bad thing...
BTW, for others reading this, I want to be really clear that the "you" does not refer to John, just dealer service in general. This is meant to be friendly tongue in cheek + not to imply he wouldn't have done better. We don't even live in the same country!
James...
