I understand your descriptions of customers and how their attitudes and approaches to car repairs color your perceptions. But bear in mind, John, that while the customer experience which your skills and your dealership offer may leave people smiling, the majority of us have generally not had those experiences... from any dealer of any make of car.
Far too often dealers treat customers with thinly veiled contempt. Whether a customer is paying for the work or it's warranty repairs, they don't deserve to be treated poorly, be lied to, mislead, have unnecessary work done, be overcharged, or be told stuff like, "they all do that." All of us on this forum understand the economics of dealerships and why they charge more, but we also understand value and tend to vote with our wallets.
Outside of warranty work, I don't see where dealers add much value over a competent indy tech who knows the cars he's working on. Even when I still had a local dealer I used my indy for non-warranty work. Same work, same or better quality, much less money.
My two two local indies who value my business, are always straight with me, charge fairly, and treat me with courtesy and respect. As I do them. And I do drop off a bottle of wine or a case of beer at Christmas, too.
