That is some dissertation about dealing with the public. Its interesting you don't name your position whether it is a tech, service engineer, or some other. Certainly not a common mechanic. We appreciate your participation and knowledgeable support of Saabnet, your a good informative read.
Unfortunately most dealers are high rent retailers where the customer pays for a bunch for overhead like, greed, fancy buildings, and lots of support personnel. Too many dealers treat customers like prey, by taking the high ground and intimidating or befuddling them into paying more than they should. People avoid dealers because of the way they are treated. I have to take the niece’s car in for its “free” oil changes, because they invariably charge her for something if she takes it in. She’s a working student nurse living on her own, and can’t afford to be clipped for unnecessary charges. They know why I’m there.
The place amazes me, there are 3 service managers, at least one porter, a couple gals at the main door that vet customers and occasionally answer the phone, cleaning people that move like molasses, a couple cashiers, and who knows how many others you can’t see. Presumably there are people working on cars in there. Wander around the show room and nobody pays any attention, those who come in the service entrance escape being intimidated by sales people. Somebody is paying for all this, must be those who pay $500 for a fancy chrome gas cap for their pickup.
The dealer people who actually work on vehicles end up carrying a lot more than themselves, and may not be paid appropriately for their efforts. Many times these people are not allowed enough time to properly diagnose and do a careful through job. None of this is new, we can only hope you work for one that is fair
Saab has so few dealers and knowledgeable independents that many people don’t consider owning one, give up on them if they do, or DIY.
DIY has advantages like performing preventative maintenance at your convenience, knowing exactly how and what was done, satisfaction of doing the job, knowing the condition of the car, and saving some money. The down side is gaining the experience, knowledge, and tools to do a good job.
I’m getting to the age where crawling under and bending over cars is getting painful. Will have to check if the little shop in town will let me hang around and offer a little knowledge about a car he has never worked on before. Dealers maybe wonderful, but they know the cards better than most people. I’d be more willing to buy a new car if it could be done on the internet, paper work and all. Then pick it up at a remote warehouse where there are no sharks.
