We had the opposite experience, the Canadian border people didn't even ask to see our passports (or any ID at all), which is obviously too lax. I'm not trying to defend one versus the other. I suspect a lot of them on both sides are victims of the power trip they get from being able to tell people what they can and can't do, when they can go and when they have to wait.
