In my opinion anyway. When that campaign first came out the only thing in Mazda lineup with any sportiness at all was the Miata. The Miata is great, but the poor thing shouldn’t have to carry a whole brand’s marketing message!
However, Mazda did what Japanese brands are often good at, certainly compared to US brands (or Saab) – they had commitment to their message and campaign and over the next decade completely turned around their brand based on the zoom zoom campaign. Launching the branding before they had the cars to back it up seemed iffy to me, but hey, can’t argue with results. The Mazda3, Mazda6, their Mazdaspeed variants, and the Rx8 all worked as the ‘driver’s aletrnative’ to their competition. As to anyone that thinks Mazda's current lineup doesn't fullfill the zoom zoom promise, I’d invite you to drive a Corolla or Camry and then step into a Mazda3 or Mazda6 – trust me, they’ll feel pretty zoomy then.
