Things I'd think about...

You might go looking for an off-lease Ford Escape. If you get one that's optioned up they are a pretty decent car and you can get them fixed/serviced just about anywhere. The last one I rented drove pretty well and they hold a lot of stuff... kids, dogs, etc. I've generally found Ford build quality to be good and the cars hold up pretty well. Or maybe an off-lease Ford Edge with AWD.
You should also look at Hyundai. They have 3-4 SUV-like models. Not the greatest in "fun to drive" terms but they are pretty good cars. The ones I've driven seem a bit underpowered, but they have all been rentals with the smallest engines.
Nissans are generally pretty nice and I find they have good seats (for a Japanese car). A friend has a Murano and raves about it. I've been in the Nissan Rogue and it's OK but seems a bit small. Outward visibility in both Murano and Rogue is a bit limited, which I find annoying and even a deal killer.
OTOH, vvk has a good point. Use the 'suzu for the 5 mile commute. Rent something for trips. Not a bad way to go, depending on how often you do trips.
