we've rented a few recently. personally, I'm finding suv's are becoming less and less appealing to me... crummy fuel economy + crummy driving experience is a lot to pay for a little more clearance + a little more hauling room... personally, I'd look at awd wagons, eg Audis, Volvos, VW, and Subaru Outbacks (in that order for me... don't love subies, but some do)... that is unless you can hold out for an XWD 9-3 (when they make it to the used market)... maybe another option would be Porsche Cayenne? maybe too pricey used, but was the cheapest Porsche for a while... lots around...
Right now, we're renting a GMC Acadia on a road trip. Last year it was a Forester. We generally prefer the Acadia over Forester for comfort + more predictable driving characteristics, but it gets about 5mpg worse fuel economy + the Forester fuel economy was imho pretty bad, certainly compared to a 9-5...
I don't understand why Saab didn't sell gazillions of 9-5 wagons. These SUVs are crap in comparison yet cost the same...
