With any cover, head, or anything with more than one fastener, I always start all the fasteners a few turns by hand, then run them down until they lightly contact the cover, before doing any torqueing. Getting all the fasteners started before tightening minimizes chances of misalignment and having fasteners bind or not wanting to engage the threads. With the soft valve cover gasket, snuging them down lightly in sequence to will help seat the gasket. This maybe a little more time consuming but things go together well. If you insert and torque the fasteners one at a time, then following the factory sequence is less likely to cause issues. It makes me cringe when I see fasteners (wheel lugs for example) torqued when the other fasteners are loose or not installed.
