I think you mean MHz, not kHz. Even the original IBM PC operated at ~4MHz. There were never any PC hard drives as small as 512k; that's smaller than a standard density 3.5" floppy disk. I had a friend who had a 20MB hard drive, and I suspect that was just about the smallest. In 1987 we had a Tandy 1000SX, with a 5.25" drive, 3.5" drive, 16 colour monitor, dot matrix printer, no hard drive. It had the turbo mode, though it was accessed through the keyboard - boosted from 4MHz to 7MHz. You could rarely use it, because the IBM programs were all coded to operate at the standard 4MHz speed.
