Last night I changed out the water pump on my 2001 Chevy Suburban. The truck has 198k on it, and its ORIGINAL water pump was just starting to seep coolant at the weep hole. It uses orange Dex Cool. I think the coolant was changed once back around 100k. Maybe not. I know in the last 4 years (70k) I haven't done it.
Anyway, the coolant looked brand new. There was no scale or crap inside the old pump, thermostat, or hoses. The pump and thermostat lasted 10 years, 198k. Both had their original date stamps. The thermostat may have lasted longer, I just replaced it since it was off.
After seeing the way it looked inside, and how long those parts lasted, I'm now a believer in Dex cool. I don't think I would use it in something that came with a different type of coolant, but for the stuff that used it as factory fill, I'd definitely keep using it.
