I worked for Radio Shack about 15 years ago, of course that was back in the day when they still actually devoted half of the store to parts and fought hard to keep any name brand items out of their stores! For the most part, you had to go through a series of training classes in different topics like telephones, audio/video, electronic parts, computers, etc. The instruction was rather company specific, like what's the best type of telephone to sell to a particular customer, but they still touched on the fundamentals. I leaned a lot of the electronic side from when I was a kid from my dad so I already knew about types of circuits, resistors, capacitors, diodes, etc. So much of the "training" was a review for me but some of the others didn't have much understand of such things. But you were still sort of expected to understand it.
I went into a store a couple of years ago and asked for a "male motorola type plug" for my car stereo antenna connection, the guy actually took me over to the Motorola Cellular Telephones and asked if this was what I was looking for! I asked the other guy working there and he had no clue what I was talking about. So I guess they don't put them through the training anymore!
They actually would make a pretty good profit off the "parts". You could go into the computer in the back room and look up a particular item and view the retail price along with the company price (how much it cost the company to buy, ship, and market the item). Most of the time they were making at least 100% profit. There were some parts that would sell for a reasonable cost but would easily have a 400% profit! The FEW name brand items that we carried at the time have a very low profit, most were only 40-50%, so they pushed to sell the Radio Shack brand items over the "Sony" items. Funny thing was that I think all of their Radio Shack brand items were simply re-branded. I know the home theater receiver was a Pioneer because I had the same one at home!
