I don't see a tip as a referendum on the entire experience. If the food was lousy but the service good, I tip the server accordingly and complain about the food to the manager. Servers rarely have any say so to change things other than passing on complaints so I think it's pretty lame to blame them for things they have no control over--unless you're just looking for a way to wiesel out of tipping. There's plenty in life one could complain about but I guess you just have to pick your fights or risk becoming a crabby old fart. Sounds like you might be headed for the dark side.
