When I went to Windows 7, I built my new machine (using some parts of the old machine too), installed Win 7 from scratch on the new hard drive, got it configured, then installed my old ATA drive as a second hard drive (motherboard supported both PATA (old) and SATA (new)). Copied over the data I wanted from the second drive.
That was a year ago. I still have the second drive installed but I never need anything from it, just too lazy to remove it.
I actually ended up installing Linux in another partition on the new drive. The Linux boot loader found the old Windows XP install on the old second drive and added it to the boot menu. So now I can boot Win 7, Win XP, or Linux at will.
