...though what is on the road today is still a work in progress, there is a ton of R+D going into battery development, including improving low temperature performance, charging time, power density, + safety. there will be big changes over the next decade... Saab is working on this too!

hydrogen makes a little bit of sense in the context of fuel cells in an idealistic world, but practically, I think it is not the way to go (for many many reasons)...

the 96 EV example in my link (see much better link below!) is a nice but fairly simple sort of ev conversion (DC motor + lead acid batteries)... some are doing more elaborate AC motor conversions + even cooler stuff will be possible in the future once stuff gets in more mainstream channels (aka the boneyard)... people doing diy ev conversions over the last couple decades have been pioneers, so to speak, working with limited options available, mostly from the forklift industry... I'm not ready to jump into that stuff right now (would rather wait for more technological advancements + reduced cost), but if the body of our quasi-garage queen c900 holds up another 10 years + as transmissions/parts sources start to disappear/become more costly, it might be a fun project... upsides of pure EV include lots of low end torque + high reliability (due mostly to simplicity: fewer parts)... downsides - technology isn't there for long haul travel yet...

James...
