Comments here reflect my research. This seems to be something of a Mac vs PC thing all over again. I only know one person with a Droid who likes it, and he's an uber-geek. Others I know with Droids are good technically but say the interface is frustrating and gets in the way. They always seem to have some issue with the phone.
So...
making it more difficult is a periodic need for a phone that works in Europe. Not critical for me, as with Verizon I can temporarily switch to my current Motorola Z6 World Phone when in Europe and still use a non-GSM iPhone for WiFi. For daughter #2 it's harder.
She's a fashion model who can have to be in some Euro city for 2-3 months at a time and needs a smartphone, or at least ready access to email. She's played with Droids and doesn't like them. Does anyone have any idea if the next version of the iPhone from Verizon will work on GSM networks? Or is this less of an issue if it's a 4G phone? (rumors abound, such as it having a SIM card, but haven't found anything definitive.)
I don't follow phone technology, so I'm trying to figure it out.
