If you set your mirrors up the right way you can all but eliminate blind spots. The link below is to the procedure from Car Talk on NPR, but it is basically the standard SAE process for setting mirrors to reduce or eliminate blind spots. When done right (some fine tuning is required based on your car, driving position, etc.) a car will disappear from the center interior mirror and show up in one of the side mirrors. Most or all blind spots go away.
Was with daughter #2 in Miami last weekend and we were coming back from the 'Glades. I had to make a fast lane change for some reason and she said "that's dangerous: you don't do a shoulder check to see if someone was in the right lane." I told her the way the mirrors are set up let me know the lane is clear, which it was with the only car in it just visible in inside mirror.
I had her set the mirrors in her 'OG 9-3 up this way, but she still believes what she was taught in driver's ed (she's still 17) so she still has blind spots. But at least I know she shoulder checks!
European left side mirrors are more convex than US ones so you get a better view, but they aren't usually available on cars here.
