when i took driver's ed awhile ago, i was taught one of the 1st things you do each time you get in the car is to set your seat and check your mirrors (and of course put on the seat belt). for a period of time, i can honestly say i did not follow the training as i felt it was unnecessary. also at the time, i was not taught the method you described, but it is something i have used the past few years and am now a full convert. i would suggest that the reason most people like to set the mirrors so they can see the side of the car when they are sitting in the middle of the seat is that it saves them from taking the time set them properly each time they get in the car; they already know where the mirrors are set since they can see the car - which is harder to deduce immediately without setting them properly. early on i was worried that i would not be able to tell if someone had bumped my mirrors out of adjustment while i was parked, but i quickly fell into checking them each time to be sure. it is a big improvement in my mind when you can change lanes on the highway, without having to look to the side or rear 1st.
