Most municipal zoning ordinances allow for an outbuilding that could be used as a non-business related workshop or writing studio, etc. Uncertain about home office use though since it's a different usage (business) than a workshop, studio or storage building. Always check with a building official first.
Modern Sheds are nice, but quite expensive. They can be easily imitated or customized to create an affordable DIY solution. Pour a slab on a bed of gravel (like a garage) or even build a floor on treated skids. Watch local auction or CL for salvaged materials like siding, roofing and windows. The framing material is cheap and relatively easy to assemble. A single low sloped pitched roof is also easy to frame and can be roofed with Ice and Water shield (non granulated) and simple agricultural corrugated roofing. Interior can be drywall or finish grade plywood or many other creative products. Insulate, heat with electric baseboard or a wood stove.
Have fun!
