I'm with TD Meloche Monex also... I renew my insurance with them semi-annually because we have winter + summer cars that we switch in + out of the policy + also switch off the commute aspect when biking etc... they always ask if the cars have mods, doesn't matter who I speak to... they have been asking more questions lately also - are cars garaged, what sort of parking at work etc, even for ones that are only covered for basic liability + not physical damage...
I wouldn't consider a stainless exhaust system or shock or similar non-oem part a mod... but if the car was chipped, sure... and fair enough... many people who do that are a higher average insurance risk (you don't chip a car unless you're interested in speed)...
Remember, Meloche is a low overhead group insurance company with everything done over the phone... that's why the rates are very good... they are based on insuring supposedly lower risk populations of well educated professionals (whether that group is really lower risk is debatable of course)... also the person on the phone is probably not that highly paid + just has to follow the rules...
there can be some variation... if you go to the website (or get a less experienced person on the phone), they can't insure older cars (like our 1989) or older homes (our house is over 100 years old)... sometimes it's just luck of the draw, but the newbies usually will ask a superior if they are confused...
fwiw, I've never had a claim (with any insurer for anything), but friends who have from Meloche had no problems at all... even after multiple "not their fault" claims (trees repeatedly falling on cars etc), they have low rates...
I would call them back + try to sort it out... you will most likely get a different person on the phone... I've generally been quite happy with them partly because the rates are vastly better than our prior insurer + in some ways the coverage is better also...
