I've owned four VWs and each one of them was far more problematic than my '03 9-5 Aero. VWs are great to drive, and the 1.8T is a lively engine. But after 5 years of relatively trouble-free miles on my 9-5, I'd NEVER go back to a VW. Nightmarish electrical problems and horrible dealers (mine has long had a reputation of fixing one problem and creating another) are more than enough to keep me from ever getting another VW.
Newer 9-5s are reliable and rewarding to own and drive. Find one with service records (5k oil changes with synthetic) and you've got a far better car than a Jetta, IMO.
