The next time anyone parts out a C900, feed the entire car through the scanner, one piece at a time ;-) reminds me of the joke in MASH, where "Radar" sent a Jeep home back in the States via USPS, one piece at a time.
There are several approaches to "3D printing"; some involve compositing from powder like the video showed, whereas others involve laser sintering. A big advantage I can see with this approach is, just like on-demand printing in book publishing: much less need for warehousing. The Just-In-Time production method also saves capital carry cost. As mentioned in a previous thread on BMW parts warehouse, the more hands touching the parts along the line from the manufacturing to the consumer, the more expensive things get. Traditional manufacturing methods involve economy of scale, which automatically creates choke points where all sorts of marketing and political interests latch themselves onto and jack up prices. These generic "3d printing" manufacturing methods provide enormous potential for decentralization. That will also cut down on the environmental impact of centralized mega manufacturing facilities and their effluence.
