true, but the economies of scale associated with processes like stamping and injection molding are pretty overwhelming...
I've always found things like multiphoton laser writing (as a micromachining concept) cool, but unless one can do it fast, or batch-wise, it's a kind of cool idea with a bit of prototyping potential, but somewhat limited in terms of production capacity/cost effectiveness... this strikes me as a little similar... the ability to replicate sophisticated molded parts (and assemblies!!) is very cool + practical though...
one of the downsides of scanning parts to reverse engineer CAD, is it doesn't capture the tolerancing, materials spec, etc that are very important parts of a engineering drawing... (it's a form of design by test, unless someone applies some engineering skill to mark up the result)... that said, there are loads of non-critical or cosmetic parts where this is kind of approach is invaluable, and as you suggest, the automotive industry is full of those kinds of parts...
