Your mileage may vary

Alright, I've always known the basic "rules" for getting good economy--drive slower on the highway, acelerate gently, etc. I can do the slower on the highway (I consider 70 slow enough) but I've never quite had the patience to do the slower acelerating thing. My new, large, heavy, square, non-Saab vehicle has an "Eco" mode. It's basically a vacuum guage light that goes off when you acelerate too hard. Just for fun I thought I'd try it. You really have to accelerate gently to keep the light on (to the point of anoying the hell out of most drivers). What I didn't realize we HOW MUCH difference it would make. Over the weekend I got 19 mpg (I was getting about 16) in mostly city driving, which is the EPA highway rating. On a previous trip I'd gotten 20 mpg on the highway by keeping the cruise set at 70mph which I though was pretty good. What I would do was when I had to get in the "fast lane" I'd step up the speed with the accelerator to stay with the flow. So what I did this time was use the cruise control to slowly step up the speed and not kick the "eco" light off. I got 22 MPG! Obviously this isn't a particularly efficient vehicle and if I still cummuted and wanted to drive normally a Saab would be the car. But I'm truly amazed at how much diifference you can make simply by altering HOW you drive. I'm taking another trip next weekend--I'm wondering if I kept it at 65 and drafted semis, what kind of mileage could I get?
