The observed 23 MPG that we got on our first tank was actually during a lot of mountain driving and I certainly wouldn't consider it highway driving. On the way to Red River, New Mexico from Boulder, Colorado, we had a significant number of stops, ups, downs, curves, hills...I'd probably rate it at about 55% actual highway-speed driving...so, even more reason for me to be impressed with the initial reading. Most of our daily driving in the 9-4X is probably 60% city/40% highway and the average has been between 22 and 24 MPG...but that's with my wife's heavy foot doing most of the pedal-pushing. :-) If it stays about the same as it is now, I'll be perfectly happy.
