I have a lot of friends with BofA and the summary I get is fantastic smart phone app, great ATM network, pretty poor customer service and lots of fees.
I've been a long time Wachovia customer (which got bought out by Wells Fargo a while ago) and don't particularly like the direction they're going - lots more fees and nickel and dimming, and diminished perks for premium accounts (foreign ATM withdrawal fees are insane now, no more 2 non-network ATM fee forgiven a month). Between this and what United is doing to Continental, I'm not the biggest fan of takeovers there days. The plus side is their ATM network is truly national now.
I'd say either way you're getting a big impersonal bank that we'll try to milk you at every opportunity and not be very responsive. Still might be a good choice if you travel a lot, want lots of branches, better online banking, etc., but if you want more local personalized services you could consider a good credit union too.
